Day 5 Monday 26 January Santiago Chile

A transit day with our morning flight from Calama to Santiago. There was time in the afternoon to see some of the sights: an elegant city with its colonial history evident.

Bicentennial Park - commemorating independence from Spain in 1810

Plaza de Armas and Metropolitan Cathedral

                         Central Post Office

                        The cathedral's magnificent interior.

The La Moneda Palace was undergoing renovation.

The statue of Salvador Allende hinted at Chile's turbulent political history.

In 1973 Allende's democratically elected government was ousted in a coup d'etat supported by the CIA.  As troops surrounded La Moneda Palace, Allende gave his last speech, vowing not to resign. Later that day, Allende died by "suicide" in his office. He had been a champion of the working class and Chile's national interests.
