Day 47 Oxford to London 2 June 2018

We left The Buttery, negotiating the narrow stairs with our suitcases.  It was probably not quite as bad as we first thought, though the image of climbing up and down a narrow ladder comes to mind.  The fellow on duty helped us with one suitcase, down one of the three flights of stairs. Certainly going down the stairs was much better than going up.

Our hotel for the next two days is The Grange Wellington. When we arrived they had no booking for us even though the tour company had sent us the details. After about half an hour, we had been upgraded to a better room with breakfast included. It was obvious that the tour company had screwed up. It was all good in the end but there were some anxious moments.

We took the tube to the London Museum. It is a history of the city from prehistoric and Roman times through until today. It was quite good, in particular their AV presentations. They had a good display of suffragette material because it’s the 100th anniversary of women obtaining the vote in the UK. One new fact is that during The Blitz, 1 in 10 people killed were children.

From extinct lions, Neolithic, Bronze and Roman ages, they had kids draw pictures from their imagination.

They had an elevator from Selfridge's.

They also had the London 2012 Olympics flame.

The most recent addition was the Fatberg which blocked up the sewerage system and was like concrete and weighed 140 tonnes. Go to Wikipedia if you would like more information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatberg
