Day 38 5 September New York

Here we are in the Big Apple. What a cheap skate!

The origin of the term "The Big Apple" had different theories, but it seems that a sportswriter in the 1920s began to use it and it became popularized as a tourism advertising campaign in the 1970s.

Today we visited the New York Public Library and had a look through what they have to offer.
Charles Dickens'  writing desk.
An early exploration map. Australia is several hundred years away from being discovered by Europeans.
An original flyer for black people to boycott the buses to protest segregation.
The original toys of Christopher Robin whose father, AA Milne had written the Winnie the Pooh books.

An original Gutenberg Bible, for being the first ever printed book. One of these 49 surviving copies would be worth $50 million.

A view from our last meal in NYC. Pity about the reflections. Times Square is more crowded once the Broadway shows finish and then it is chaos.
