Day 8 3 August Oslo

If you wanted to comment on the blog, you can now do so. It had been restricted to those with Google accounts.

On another beautiful morning, we walked down to the Nobel Peace Museum. On the way we passed their National Parliament, and they are celebrating 750 years of parliamentary rule.

Near the National Theatre there was this historic plaque. I don't know what the architect's motto is, but perhaps it could be, "No job too hard".

The Nobel Peace Museum was a very thought-provoking place. There was a special Yoko Ono exhibition, honouring her long time commitment to the cause of peace. Elizabeth knew quite a lot about her, but I knew very little. Yoko Ono is a truly gifted person.

I had predicted the Norwegian National Museum would not be as good as the Swedish one, but I was wrong. It was a modern, very well laid out museum with high quality artefacts.

Reproductions

Tapestry

A Ming vase, one of their nice nick-naks.

A painting depicting a traditional Norwegian wedding. It looks like it was a shotgun wedding.

The Historic Museum near the University had some ancient artefacts, but the main attraction was their small but significant collection of Viking artefacts.

A rare Viking golden spur.

Viking helmet

Unfortunately, the really important Viking Museum where two famous longships are located is closed. So, we thought that we should visit the Viking Planet Museum as they have 3-D access to the original museum.

How Viking art changed over time.

Computer program which allowed you to select a character and then dress them. It's like a Nordic Barbie.

They had AV presentations, a VR experience which needed a lot more work. Some of the interactive exhibits worked well, others not so good, and some not at all. We are not sure if their motto is: “Our technology has it limits” or “Computer says nei!”

They had to restart their computers.
