Today its goodbye to the Grand Canyon as we head off to Las
Vegas. We stopped at Seligman which is one of the fading towns on Route 66. The construction of interstate highways
bypassed many of these small towns. Full
of 50’s kitsch and a hint of desperation.
Our Tour Guide Tara (pronounced Terra) had organized a game where you had to find as many Americans as possible and find their state of birth. The winner had 36 states covered but we decided that we would never do that. Instead we researched where famous Americans were born, Only a couplr we made up e,g Hannah Montana and George Washington. Who would have thought that Wyatt Earp was born in Alaska!

We drove through Las Vegas before we reached our hotel, the
Bellagio with its fountains. There is a
lot to see. In the underground car park I spotted a van that had two replica
heavy machine guns on top. Presumably they advertise a shooting gallery where
you can fire anything, including machine guns. There are so many
shops! It all seems quite overwhelming at first, as there are people
everywhere. It seems like an alien landscape. Once you orientate yourself and
realise that everyone else is a tourist it’s not so bad. Check out the view from our hotel room overlooking the Paris Casino.
The fountains were nice and the strip is more attractive at
night.
