Today we left the Scenic Sapphire and made our way
by taxi to the Avignon TGV high speed railway station. I told Elizabeth that I was sure our train
transfer would be easy! The SNCF train
was late by 4 hours. We were originally told that it would be three hours late.
The annoying thing was that there were no announcements on the digital display
boards giving us information. All it said was that the 8.43 AM train to Madrid
was “retarded”, which is French but I think for us it had two meanings. We
almost got on a train heading to Frankfurt.
Our train eventually arrived. We
were lucky being in first class, as we were the only passengers in a salon for 8.
Unfortunately things got worse. As the train was
four hours late, it was suddenly terminated in Barcelona. We then were given
instructions on meeting a connecting train, but the instructions were
incorrect, so we missed that train. We were then reticketed on the next train,
so it was an extra hour we had to wait. Instead of arriving at our hotel at 4
PM, we arrived at 10.30PM. Although I have to say that the taxi service was
excellent. Our taxi driver had an
interesting choice in music – our introduction to Spanish music was Boney M’s “Ma
Baker”. Even at this time of night in
Madrid, we saw lots of people out and many beautiful buildings. Madrid had a real vibe!
