Day 79 9 June 2015 Regensberg

We skipped lunch today as we had enough stored in our humps. We did not do the walking tour of Regensburg but opted for the half day tour to the Weltenberg Abbey.  This is a Benedictine Monastery founded by Irish or Scottish monks in the 7th Century. It has the oldest brewery in the world founded around 1050 AD.  They produce a very dark lager which have won awards, though I am not sure why.  There was nothing wrong with it but it didn’t really have a distinctive taste, in fact it didn’t taste like anything.

The Church was very interesting and the highlight features is that the ceiling has been painted so it appears that it is done on a curved roof, we saw the same technique used at the Melk Abbey Church.
They also used stage art or alter art which we had not seen before with figures being used above the alter ro tell a story.  The main one shows St George killing the dragon.

In order to get to it we went through the narrowest part of the Danube River going through the very cleverly named, Danube Gorge.  It was quite a scenic and interesting trip having views of the gorge as well as Liberation Hall.  Thus was built by King Ludwig of Bavaria to commemorate the wars of 1813 when they were liberated from Napoleonic rule.
