Day 24 Edinburgh to Inverness 10 May 2018

This morning we were off to St Andrews, the university and golfing town. The beach is where the film Chariots of Fire was filmed. More recently it is more famous for being where Kate met William. It seems ironic that in a country where you probably can’t go outside for 6 months of the year that thy designed one of the world’s most popular outdoor sports.

Crossing over to Dundee we saw the new Albert and Victoria  Museum and the exploration ship the RSS Discovery.. It has the distinction of taking Captain Scott and Shackelton on Scott's first (and I suspect only) successful trip to Antarctica..

After lunch we visited Blair Castle. After Queen Victoria and Albert first visited there, the popularity of Scotland became more widespread. Going by the contents of the castle, the 6th Duke of Atholl was seriously cashed up. He provided Victoria with his personal bodyguard and was so impressed that she issued a warrant that allowed the Duke to have a private army.  In fact it’s the only private army in Europe, according to our tour guide, perhaps he has not heard of Vladimir Putin.

We also saw Highland Cattle, cute but not good for meat, more like a pet.

Impressive bridge.

On to the Battle of Culloden which has mass graves on it only identified by simple engraved stone markers.  It marked the end of serious Scottish resistance and the highland clearances that also led to the great migration of the Scots to other places of the world.
