Day 29 Glasgow to Londonderry, Northern Ireland 15 May 2018

Today was an early start to cross the ferry to Ireland. It was smooth as a mill pond. The island offshore has a legend.

When giants inhabited the world, the Irish giant Finn McCool would hurl challenges across the Irish Sea to the Scottish giant. Eventually the Scottish giant built a causeway across the sea. The giant’s wife saw him coming unfortunately her giant husband was drunk and the Scottish giant was twice his size. Quick thinking she gave her husband another beer with something to make him sleep. She then dressed him in a nappy. When the Scottish giant arrived he wanted to fight him but she said that he was out in the fields but would be back. She invited him in and when he saw the huge baby he decided to leave fearing the size of the father and destroyed the causeway behind him. When Finn awoke he angrily threw a rock towards the Scottish giant and this explains the rock where it is.

A highlight of the trip so far as it seems, is visiting the Giant’s Causeway. It was raining lightly on the way in but stopped when we arrived. It was a little breezy but really wonderful, I would hate to come in summer.  It was much more extensive area of landform than the small part that we saw.

Some of the Londonderry road signs are defaced with the London blacked out. Catholics call it Derry, Protestants – Londonderry.
