Day 36 Tuesday 28 April 2015 Palermo Sicily

Posted on Mothers' Day
Happy Mothers' Day to Betty, Evelyn, Debbie, Melissa, Maria, Sherrie, Robyn, Kathy and anyone else we missed...and a very special Mothers' Day for Leonie.
Sorry we missed your birthday Will but we spent your birthday money on beer and chocolate.  Only joking, we only spent it on beer.
A very interesting looking port and I thought that there was a towering Norman castle but it had been built rather recently as a convention centre, go figure. Sicily to a large extent mountains and it looks surprisingly green, I assume it browns off in Summer.
Our tour was in the afternoon so being in port the internet finally worked and I was able to upload some photos of the Cocos-Keeling Islands if you want to check them out. We went into town and successfully bought some gelato and drinks with our limited Italian and the Sicilians’ limited English.  We found the Opera House which was quite impressive with a top that was reminiscent of the Brandenburg Gate.  Palermo is quite large and we found the vehicle traffic in Greece similar to Australia but in Sicily check out the parking.  Just imagine every inch of a city street with a car angled in including corners and across pedestrian crossings.  Crossing the street was an adventure and pedestrian crossings are more of a metaphor than a reality, in fact their presence is purely decorative.
Our tour in the afternoon took us around part of the city Massimo Theatre that featured in Godfather III, we went to the Capuchin Catacombs.  This were embalmed corpses or skeletons on display that was a real eye opener and quite disturbing.  We weren’t permitted to take photographs as it is cemetery.  The last embalmed body placed on display was in 1920.  It really was based on wealth as there were no poor people there.
Our next stop was a Norman castle Ziya.  It really was quite impressive and had a lot of steps.

Our last stop was Spasimo Church which despite the name was also really very impressive inside.
