The Cathedral of Santa Maria in the Piazza del Duomo was
possibly one of the best things we had seen on the trip. The exterior of the church was quite
remarkable. Florence is where the Renaissance began and it does show. Our tour
guide was called Rosa and was 4 foot nothing, about 90 and walked like the wind, we
struggled to keep up with her. She walked us to the bridge called the Ponte
Vecchio where the shops are on the bridge and we finished up at the basilica
Santa Croce. On the way we saw a replica of David (see below) and at the time they were filming a Dan Brown book with Tom Hanks and Ron Howard. There is a protest scene against nudity and if you look carefully, ever so carefully, in the background you won't see myself or Elizabeth.
We were given a demonstration on gold jewellery and leather
making. What they can do is really quite amazing and they had some beautiful
pieces. If I was 30 I would have bought
a leather jacket but if I wore one today I would just look like a Sharpie dog…sad
but true. I did however buy a leather belt with my initials on it, what are the
chances??
In the afternoon we were off to Pisa. It is quite a large complex and leaning bell
tower of Pisa wasn’t as impressive as the church that went with it. It was well worth the visit and it was quite
busy. A girl, a potential pickpoint, was checking out Elizabeth
while she was photographing but she was aware of what was happening.
