We went to Montmartre this morning and walked the stairs to
the top of the Sacre Coeur Church (Sacred Heart). We had driven past the Moulin Rouge to get
there and it did seem a bit seedy with the type of premises nearby. We had
considered going but the neighbourhood put us off well and truly. There was the
artists’ quarter that we visited and they were excellent although we weren’t
inclined to have portraits done.
Our tour of Notre Dame showed an impressive building that
was more austere, not as colourful as other cathedrals. We had a farewell dinner for our guides and
drivers that was put on with free alcohol…woohoo! There were some lovely speeches, them
thanking us, but largely us thanking them. They were excellent - Giuseppe was
our guide who was born in Australia who was masterful at his job and Rocco our
driver who if you have ever seen the narrow roads and chaotic driving
conditions, he was simply amazing.
