Day 37 Wednesday 29 April
2015 Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii
Our guide was Marco and was very good. We battled the traffic and went into what
claimed to be the longest tunnel in Europe at 5.3 Km long. Not the busiest time of year for Sorrento but
a picturesque part of the Italian coastline.
Off-shore is the island of Capri where Roman emperor Tiberius had his villa.
The roads are very narrow and the biggest lemons you are ever likely to
see. I didn’t like Sorrento so much probably
too crowded and was probably not different to a lot of other coastal urban
areas in Italy. For Elizabeth it had
charm and shopping. Too touristy for me.
DFO shopping at the seaside essentially.
Pompeii what a lunch
experience! For about $20 you got a
whole Pizza, salad, drink and pastries woohoo!
There were a lot of people including school groups but we were able to
navigate through. The surprising thing
was the sheer size of the place. To see how the city was organised and the
house of a noble and you could seethe remains of the wall decorations and it
must have been absolutely magnificent.
The red light district was very popular with the tourists.
It was back to the ship for our
last evening aboard. We were the only ones
at our table that night though Pete and Roz a lovely couple from Adelaide came
down to say goodbye as Pete has been very ill with a chest infection. We said goodbye to Desianto our dinner waiter
and to Aryianto our cabin steward, both from Indonesia. Tomorrow morning is an early start as our
tour groups should be the first off the ship.
